workshop on “Nurturing Innovation: Intellectual Property (IP) Strategies in Food Technology and Biotechnology”The Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), in collaboration with the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) (AFSTI), organised a workshop on “Nurturing Innovation: Intellectual Property (IP) Strategies in Food Technology and Biotechnology” on March 6, 2025, at TNJFU-Institute of Fisheries Post Graduate Studies, Chennai.
The workshop covered key aspects of patents, trademarks, copyrights, geographical indications (GIs), designs, and the Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act, and sessions on patent drafting and filing procedures, traditional knowledge in food and biotech and IP commercialisation and technology transfer.

Sasi Praba delivered a dedicated session on “Patents & Designs: Process, Scope, and Challenges in the Food and Biotech Sector”, in which she discussed the fundamentals of patent eligibility in food processing and food technology, including the distinction between trade secrets and food recipes, and provided a detailed explanation of the requirements, challenges, and scope of patents in these domains.
Overall, these discussions provided a holistic understanding of protecting and monetising innovations in the rapidly developing food and biotech industries.
